We are looking for a skilled communicator experienced in media relations, strategic communications planning, public engagement, internal and stakeholder communications, crisis communications and issues management for this exciting new exempt role at the City. This assignment is for a two year term, subject to budget funding approval.
Reporting to the Communications Manager, you will lead a small team of communications professionals and provide strategic and tactical communications deliverables to the City. You will assist the Manager by overseeing the creation and implementation of dynamic City communications strategies and activities; oversee graphic standards, materials and written work; promote success stories; and provide preparation and support in emergency situations. You will also liaise between City departments, agencies, and partners, and ensure all communications campaigns are executed full circle, maximized and evaluated. Other responsibilities include proactive and reactive media relations, issues management, media enquiries, policies, and communication with the public.
Your qualifications include a degree in communications or media relations, and/or several years of relevant work experience in a supervisory capacity, preferably in a municipal environment. A thorough understanding of the technologies and tools specific to the development of materials, website, apps and social media platforms, is required. You will also have demonstrated interpersonal and leadership skills. Considerable knowledge of strategic communications, a keen sense of design esthetics, and excellent written communications round out your technical skill set. A valid class 5 BC Driver’s License is required.
