Library Assistant 1 = $22.03 to $25.84 per hour Shelver = $17.09 per hour plus 12% in lieu of all benefits and vacation

The New Westminster Public Library has exciting opportunities for auxiliary staff to join our team. We are looking for auxiliary Library Assistant 1s and Shelvers.

The New Westminster Public Library is a busy, customer-focused library serving a diverse clientele in an urban setting.

As a Library Assistant you will use your stellar customer service skills to help patrons use the library and borrow library materials, welcome and register new patrons; and undertake a variety of other routine library and clerical tasks. You will have a passion for helping people and ideally, you already have previous library experience.

As a Shelver you will use your excellent and detailed organizational skills to ensure library collections are in correct order and neatly shelved. You will help us keep clean and orderly spaces that help staff and customers find what they are looking for. Other duties will include other routine library and clerical tasks as required.

Requirements include:
  • Completion of Grade 12, and some library or office experience. 
  • High School students will be considered for Shelver hours. 
  • Demonstrated general proficiency with Windows desktop applications including Word, Excel and Outlook; accurate keyboarding; experience with other technology including desktop publishing, social media, and mobile devices required. 
  • Familiarity and comfort with using consumer technologies such as Google Chromebooks, ebook readers, desktop computers, etc.
  • Excellent customer services skills and demonstrated ability to deal calmly, courteously, and effectively with people of all ages, backgrounds and nationalities. 
  • Ability to work cooperatively at a busy service desk, to attend accurately to detail under pressure, and adjust to different levels of activity and duties at service desks. 
  • Availability to work mornings, afternoons, and evenings, most weekdays, and weekends including Sundays.
  • Availability to work at both library locations (Uptown New Westminster and Queensborough) preferred. 
  • The successful candidate is required to successfully pass and maintain a clear Police Information Check.

*Library Assistants and Shelvers work varying shifts 7 days per week including weekdays, evenings or weekends on an on-call basis. Applicants who only have limited availability may not be considered.
