This is skilled plumbing work in an auxiliary capacity at the journeyman level. The Trades 2 – Plumber exercises considerable independent judgment in dealing with technical work problems involving the maintenance, repair and installation of plumbing and sanitary storm facilities throughout City facilities and may supervise the work of one or more subordinates engaged in less skilled tasks. In addition the incumbent performs minor maintenance and repair tasks on heating equipment. The position is subject to call at any time. Duties include installing piping, fitting, tanks and valves in water systems and hot water systems including mains and branches; and maintains and repairs plumbing, heating and sanitary storm facilities; performing pipe laying and caulking operations in laying water mains; installing, testing, maintaining and repairing natural gas lines, appliances, equipment and accessories in accordance with provincial safety codes; inspecting and testing cross connection and back flow prevention systems; installing, maintaining, and repairing pool chlorine systems; maintaining adequate stock of parts, materials and equipment in shop and requisitions same as required. Estimating materials required in the plumbing work as required, and performing related work as required.
Qualifications include completion of Grade 12 supplemented by the completion of a recognized Trade Certificate of Qualification plus considerable general experience at the Journeyman level; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Thorough knowledge of standard practices, methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the plumbing trade. Considerable knowledge of hazards and safety precautions of the trade such as WorkSafe BC regulations, plumbing codes, regulations and standards and W.H.M.I.S; and of the City Plumbing regulations and standards. Ability to work from blueprints, sketches, rough drafts and to follow instructions; to assign and supervise the work of one or more subordinates engaged in less complex plumbing tasks; and to maintain simple records, estimate materials required and requisition parts and materials as required. Skill in the use and care of tools, materials and equipment used in the plumbing trade. Driver’s License for the Province of British Columbia, Certificate of Qualification – Plumber, British Columbia Class B Level Gas Fitters License, AWWA Cross Connection Certificate and Chlorine Handling Certification are required.
