This position encourages and facilitates business submissions from Squamish Nation members for the start-up, expansion or acquisition of viable business opportunities. The Small Business Officer acts as a resource and has strong business and financial knowledge. The Small Business Officer provides the potential entrepreneur with the requirements or guidelines necessary for developing the business plan, financial planning, cash flow forecasts, marketing plan, and business registration of licensing requirements.

Typical Duties & Responsibilities:
  • The Small Business Officer provides necessary information to the entrepreneurs.
  • Makes recommendations to the prospective entrepreneur.
  • Keeps up-to-date and develops resources on current financial assistance programs for entrepreneurs.
  • Develops and maintains an appropriate information or data collection system on small business activity within the Squamish Nation.
  • Makes various presentations and reports to membership.
  • Provides training and information sessions for potential entrepreneurs.
  • Assists the Squamish Nation in developing policies and programs related to small business.
  • Assists with applications for proponents to maximize opportunities for Squamish Nation business entrepreneurs and Squamish Nation members.
  • Adheres to workplace health & safety policies, safe work practices and procedures.
  • Participates as a member of the Project Negotiation & Development and Business Revenue & Services teams.
Education, Level of Experience & Hiring Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s Degree, Level 3 CPA or technical institute diploma specializing in Finance, Business Administration, or Economics, or relevant/related field from a recognized post-secondary institution.
  • Plus 2 -3 years (with Bachelor) or 5 - 7 years (with Diploma) of directly-related experience in the majority of duties listed in job description including development of business plans, marketing plans, financial forecasting, funding programs and grants, working knowledge of personal and corporation taxation for Aboriginal Status, social media, excellent writing and presentation skills, diplomatic, tactful interpersonal skills, excellent in organization, planning skills/time management as well as the ability to take direction, etc.
  • Must have the technical knowledge necessary to assist members with the startup of viable business and entrepreneur opportunities.
  • As career progresses, incumbent may be required to successfully complete job-related, short-term upgrading, training and courses relating to accounting, banking, taxation laws, and business development, etc; and may be required to upgrade in order to obtain additional business education and training.
  • Experience as an intermediate level user of MS Office, the internet, etc.
  • Working experience with a large scale computerized database system. Experience with JD Edwards is an asset.
  • Previous experience working in a First Nations Community (particularly Squamish) is an asset.
  • Must have a valid BC Driver’s License Class 4 or 5, Class 7N may be considered.
  • Must have a reliable vehicle and current auto insurance.
  • Willing to work flexible hours, based upon clients’ schedules, regular duties, etc.
  • Must successfully complete Criminal Records Check as per Squamish Nation Policy.
