Transportation and Emergency Services
The Regional District of Nanaimo has an employment opportunity for a Casual Mechanic in the Transportation and Emergency Services Department.
The successful candidate will be responsible for vehicle and equipment repairs, including diagnosis and road testing, responding to roads calls for breakdowns or accidents, and the maintenance of records related to those repairs and servicing. Duties also include welding and fabricating building, plant or equipment modifications, performing building maintenance, repairs and clean up duties. The incumbent must possess a valid Class 2 BC Driver’s License with Air Brake Endorsement.
Applicants must possess a high school diploma, plus a trade’s qualification in heavy duty or commercial transport mechanics, a valid BC Commercial Vehicle Inspection Program certificate, plus over 5 years prior job-related experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience, as well as a working knowledge of WHMIS and Survival First Aid courses. Good working knowledge of hydraulics, mobile equipment, standard bus electrical systems, air conditioning and multiplex wiring systems, as well as knowledge of safe and proper operation of equipment and work procedures is also required. Familiarization with wheelchair lift/ramp and restraint system vehicles would also be an asset. The incumbent must possess excellent communications skills with the ability to work under stress and make quick judgement calls.
This is a casual Union position with varying hours of work. The (2017) rate of pay is $33.23 to $34.98 per hour, plus 9% in lieu of benefits. Visit our website at www.rdn.bc.ca for more information on the Regional District of Nanaimo.
