Main Purpose and Function
This position involves the investigation and management of all third party liability claims initiated against the City.
 
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
The successful candidate will conduct investigations into claims, analyze the City’s legal liability and quantum of damages and prepare comprehensive evaluative reports.
 
Conducting an investigation into a claim may include:
Scene inspections, photographs, scale diagrams, witness and other statements, record searches, interviews, quantifying damages (property and bodily injury), negotiating settlements, evaluating legal liability, reviewing and analyzing legal precedent, legislative protections or agreements/contracts.
 
Qualifications
Grade 12; Preferably a Chartered Insurance Professional (C.I.P.) designation, or successful completion of a substantive number of courses toward this designation; Canadian Risk Management (CRM) designation preferable or working towards completion.
 
Considerable industry knowledge combined with practical experience in the principles, practices and procedures used in claims investigation and management. Ideally a minimum of five (5) years practical and relevant experience, or a combination of successful completion of a substantive number of courses combined with relevant work experience. Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
 
Success in this position requires excellent verbal, written and negotiating skills and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of internal and external contacts including claimants and their representatives. Strong analytical and organizational skills, attention to detail and ability to prioritize work. Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Access, Excel, Outlook, internet usage, and digital cameras. Local area travel is a requirement of this position.
 
A valid B.C. driver’s license is required. The license must not include any restrictions that would affect the ability to legally and safely carry out job responsibilities. Transportation arrangements must meet the operational requirements of the department.
