The Community
The District of Invermere, a vibrant community of 3400 people tucked between the Purcell’s and the Rockies in the East Kootenay’s, invites applications for the position of Manager of Public Works.  As the service centre for the Upper Columbia Valley, Invermere is the gateway to outdoor recreational opportunities that are endless.  From kayaking on Lake Windermere and the Columbia River Wetlands to skating the longest skating track in the world, to playing one of 12 golf courses in the region to skiing at Panorama to hiking in the world renown Rockies and Purcells, Invermere has it all!

The Position
Reporting to the Chief Administrative Officer and as a key member of the senior management team, the Manager of Public Works provides oversight and leadership for capital infrastructure projects, asset management, vehicle and equipment acquisition, parks and facilities maintenance, civil engineering, water and wastewater utilities, water conservation programs, solid waste management practices and waste reduction public education programs.  

The successful candidate will have a reputation as a results oriented professional that is passionate about public service and improving service delivery.  Specifically, the candidate will have the ability and can demonstrate the following: 
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and successfully deal with multiple priorities;
  • Ability to develop and build systems and programs that support the effectiveness of the Public Works Department;
  • Ability to build and maintain positive relationships with people within and outside the organization;
  • Ability to exercise considerable independent judgment;
  • Bring innovation and effective leadership to the department;
  • Develop a culture of accountability and
  • Demonstrate flexibility and employ a positive “Can Do” attitude.
The successful incumbent will establish and lead a team of staff, determine priorities, ensure operational requirements are met, and work effectively with the senior management team, elected officials and the public. We are seeking a results-oriented individual with strong interpersonal and communication skills with:
  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering Science; 
  • A minimum of five years’ related experience in design, construction, project management of local government engineering projects and infrastructure planning;
  • A minimum of 3 years’ supervisory experience;
  • A member of, or eligible for, full membership in the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of BC (APEG) or the association of Applied Science Technologists and Technicians of BC (ASTTBC);
  • EOCP certifications in water distribution, water and waste water treatment would be considered an asset;
  • Strong report writing and presentation skills;
  • Demonstrated computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, and Excel);
