Jr. Planner / Development Officer

Come join our progressive team and be part of a dynamic, innovative and rewarding workplace!  Reporting to the Manager of Planning Services, the Jr. Planner/Development Officer is responsible for various duties related to land use and planning issues. Primarily, this position reviews and processes development applications, reviews development plans and proposals, and provides interpretations on Land Use Bylaw regulations to staff and the public.

Key Duties and Responsibilities: 
  • Liaise with and respond to inquiries from the public, developers, builders and their agents regarding planning and development control matters; 
  • Make recommendations on subdivision and development permit applications;
  • Conduct research, prepare written reports/ proposals and presentations for the Planning department and Council;
  • Conduct field inspections related to compliance requests, development applications and complaints;
  • Make presentations to the public at meetings and formal hearings, and present reports to County Council;
  • Assist in the preparation of local planning  documents and other department studies.

Ideal Qualifications: 
  • Post-secondary education in planning or a related field combined with at least one year of planning   experience, preferably in local government, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. An understanding of municipal rural planning is an asset.  General planning knowledge (theory, practice, land use concepts and policy planning issues) is required;
  • A working knowledge and understanding of the Municipal Government Act, Land Use Bylaws and other relevant planning documents;
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal, written and listening).  Able to give oral presentations in a clear, confident manner;
  • Able to exercise a considerable amount of judgment, action, tact and initiative;
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications.  A working knowledge of GIS is an asset;
  • Must possess a valid class 5 Alberta driver’s license and have access to reliable transportation.
