Utilities Operator I

The District of Sparwood is a friendly and welcoming community of approximately 3,800 people, nestled in the heart of the Elk Valley in the East Kootenays. Sparwood offers year-round recreational opportunities including trail systems for hiking, biking and cross-country skiing as well as world class hunting and fishing.

We are looking for a self-motivated Utilities Operator 1 to join our team on a full-time permanent basis.

Primary Function:
Under the general direction of the Utilities Foreman, the Utilities Operator 1 works as part of a cooperative team using manual labour and powered equipment and tools to construct, inspect, maintain and repair water distribution, wastewater collection, wastewater treatment and storm water collection and other utility related infrastructure. The Utilities Operator 1 also operates light trucks and equipments while engaged in activities such as digging, trenching, backfilling, loading, salting, sanding, snow plowing and snow removal.

This position will also be part of the weekend on-call rotation.

Education / Work Experience:
  • Grade 12 or equivalent
  • Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License
  • Some (1-2 years) related experience in labour or construction work, and safe operation of related tools, light trucks and small equipment.

Required Skills and Abilities / Work Demands:
  • Some knowledge of construction and maintenance methods and techniques relevant to general pipelaying labour tasks such as water or sewer main installation, etc.
  • Some understanding of WorkSafe BC regulations and related safe work practices.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work well as a member of a team and independently.
  • Ability to operate a variety of light and heavy equipment as required.
  • Physical ability to lift heavy objects, work in awkward positions and confined spaces, frequently stand and walk throughout the day and work in inclement weather.

This position is a unionized position under CUPE Local 2698 and conditions of employment are governed by the current Collective Agreement. The starting wage rate currently is $26.20, after year 1 $28.24, and after year 2 $32.10 based on a 40-hour work week.
