​​​​​​​The City of Yellowknife is actively recruiting a professional, highly skilled and experienced individual to join the senior management team in the role of Director, Public Safety.   The position has responsibility for the overall management of the Department of Public Safety, which includes the divisions of Municipal Enforcement and Fire and Ambulance.  In addition, the Director is the lead for the City in all emergency management planning and response.
As the senior member of the department’s management team, this position is responsible for the development, formulation and administration of policies and programs to ensure that the operational objectives of the department programs are met. The incumbent represents the department at all Council and Committee meetings, in negotiations with government agencies and organizations and at community and/or advisory board meetings. As the lead for the City’s emergency management planning and response, the Director works with other levels of government and other City departments to regularly review and maintain the City’s Emergency Plan, ensure personnel are aware of their roles and facilitate training to ensure the City is well prepared.
Candidates must possess a university degree in a related profession such as Business or Public Administration, plus a minimum of ten years of senior management experience, preferably in a municipal and/or public safety environment.  In addition, the position also requires a minimum of two to five years of experience in emergency management planning and response at a municipal level.  Equivalencies in qualifications and experience may be considered. A comprehensive knowledge of municipal government and a good working knowledge of budgetary control, personnel practices, municipal enforcement, fire suppression and prevention, ambulance care and hazmat response and emergency measures are required.  Excellent communication skills and the ability to draft legislation and operating policies are essential.
