This officer position is responsible for working one-on-one with clients, via telephone, email or face to face, to provide emergency/crisis intervention counselling and to determine eligibility for emergency assistance. The position supports the MSS (Member Support Services) team with cases of Emergency Assistance and follows up/authorizes as per established process. Conducts research/provides recommendations to Management and implements approved decisions, including advising members when requests are denied. Performs administration/support duties and also assists with special assignments. Operates at a high level of membership interaction, the incumbent must be able to respond with courtesy, tact and diplomacy.

Typical Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Responsible for emergency / crisis calls and intake.
  • Provides crisis intervention counselling.
  • Follows up with members, MSS team, other departments, external service providers/partners, etc.
  • Performs research to update / maintain resources, partnerships, etc.
  • Assists in the development of Emergency Services policy.
  • Performs administrative duties as required.
  • Provides after hours on-call services as required.
  • Assists Member Support Services team with events/special assignments.
  • Adheres to workplace health & safety policies, safe work practices and procedures.
  • Participates as a member of the Member Emergency Services and Member Support Services teams.

Education, Level of Experience & Hiring Requirements:
  • Diploma or Certificate in Crisis Counselling, Community Support Worker, Family Support Worker or relevant/related field from a recognized post-secondary institution.
  • Plus 1–3 years (with Diploma) OR 3–5 years (with Certificate) of directly-related work experience in the majority duties in job description including counselling, crisis management, performing intake, providing support services, caseload management, etc.
  • As career progresses, incumbent will be required to successfully complete job-required, short-term upgrading, training and courses relating to employee counselling, mediation, conflict resolution, case management , etc.
  • Experience as an intermediate level user of MS Office, the internet, etc.
  • Working experience with a large scale computerized database system. Experience with JD Edwards is an asset.
  • Previous experience working in a First Nations Community (particularly Squamish) is preferred.
  • Must have a valid BC Driver’s License Class 4 or 5, Class 7N may be considered.
  • Must have a reliable vehicle and current auto insurance.
  • Must be able to work ‘on-call’ after regular work hours as per schedule / determined by Management.
  • Must successfully complete Vulnerable Sector Criminal Records Check as per Squamish Nation Policy.
  • May be willing to consider relevant/related certificate in progress, plus a minimum of 2 years relevant/related work experience and must complete certificate within specified timeframe. May be willing to consider Grade 12 plus a minimum of 6 years relevant/related work experience with completion of certificate within a specified timeframe for the above education and experience.  The above requirements are what Squamish Nation is seeking in the ideal incumbent at the time of posting and are subject to change, based on the needs of Squamish Nation.
