This is technical, preliminary design and field work performed in the Transportation Services Division of the Engineering Department. Traffic Technician 1 investigates and responds to customer complaints and inquiries, performs field investigations, prepares preliminary designs for new or modified intersections, various traffic assets and infrastructure, assists in the maintenance and repair of street lights and traffic signals, performs inspections of work by crew or contractors, verifies invoices; reviews driveway crossing applications, development plans, Traffic Control Permit applications, liaises with external agencies about proposed construction works and lane closures; maintains asset records, prepares reports and correspondence and responds to inquiries from public and other stakeholders. Performs related work as required.
Qualifications include completion of a certificate program in civil technology including courses related to traffic engineering and CAD design, plus sound related experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Sound knowledge of applicable rules, regulations, and procedures; of the practices, methods, techniques and equipment used in traffic engineering operations, including computer software applications; and of the City's street layout and related municipal by-laws. Working knowledge of traffic engineering design principles and practices. Ability to review plans, investigate issues, collect, analyze and interpret field data and prepare reports including recommendations; to perform drawing and drafting assignments, make calculations, utilize computer software applications and perform administrative tasks; to deal effectively with the public in handling complaints and responding to inquiries; and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other departments and co-workers. Driver's Licence for the Province of British Columbia is required.
