Traffic Safety Officer


The position of a Traffic Safety Officer in Central Okanagan Public Schools (School District No. 23), Kelowna BC, is a joint venture between the City of Kelowna, the Central Okanagan Regional District and Central Okanagan Public Schools (School District No. 23).

Central Okanagan Public Schools is located in the Southern Interior of British Columbia and serves several communities within the Regional District of Central Okanagan, including Kelowna, Lake Country, and Peachland.  The District operates 5 secondary schools, 7 middle schools, 1 alternate school, 31 elementary schools and 3 administration centres.  The district employs approximately 2900 staff serving over 23,000 students with an operating budget of over $140 million.

Reporting to the Health and Safety Manager of Central Okanagan Public Schools, the incumbent will be responsible primarily for addressing traffic, parking lot, and pedestrian safety in and around school sites. 

The responsibilities of this position include:
  • provide educational awareness of safety issues to staff, parents and students;
  • plan and review school sites for traffic and pedestrian safety working with School District No. 23 Operations staff and school administration;
  • liaise with City of Kelowna and RDCO Transportation and Bylaw enforcement staff to improve safety on streets and sidewalks serving area schools;
  • delivery of programs aimed at safe travel to and from school sites, using alternate methods of travel to and from school and promoting less automobile intensive methods of travel;
  • provide traffic enforcement on school sites;
  • other duties as assigned.

The successful applicant shall also:
  • demonstrate a high level of knowledge of municipal and traffic Bylaws;
  • have experience presenting to a variety of partner groups;
  • have demonstrated liaison experience;
  • be able to work independently and make traffic safety related decisions;
  • have the ability to problem solve by assessing risk and evaluate potential outcomes;
  • have effective administrative skills and experience with Microsoft Office Software;
  • possess clear written and spoken communication skills;
  • be able to effectively deal with the public;
  • have conflict resolution skills (conflict resolution training is an asset);
  • have the ability to work flexible hours (some evening and weekend work).

Qualifications:
  • Grade 12 plus Bylaw 1 & 2 Certification and RCMP Auxiliary training;
  • Have current WorkSafeBC endorsed BC Traffic Control Person certification;
  • Two (2) years' experience in law enforcement or related position;
  • Valid B.C. Class 5 Driver’s License with clean ICBC driving abstract.

This 12 month unionized position offers a wage rate of $27.45 per hour, 8 hours per day, as well as a comprehensive benefits plan, including extended health and dental care, and participation in a defined benefit pension plan.
