Payroll Accounting Technician

Greater Victoria Public Library (GVPL) is an innovative library system with one of the highest per capita usage rates in Canada. Our vision is to inspire literacy, lifelong learning, and community enrichment for all. Serving more than 380,000+ residents in the Greater Victoria area, we provide library service to 10 municipalities. GVPL is now hiring a full-time Payroll Accounting Technician to support the Finance team with full-cycle payroll processing, accounts receivable and accounts payable transactions. The successful applicant will work diligently to provide an accurate and positive financial experience to our employees and vendors alike. This position will be located at the Central Branch in downtown Victoria.
This unionized role provides support in calculating and processing payroll, performing analysis of payroll data, and compiling reports, statements and summaries related to pay and benefit processes including the periodic independent processing of full-cycle biweekly payroll duties, as required. It also processes point of sale revenue and cash deposits and assists with accounts receivable and accounts payable transactions processing, as required.
Education and Experience
Our ideal candidate will have completed their Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) certification through the Canadian Payroll Association and have two (2) years of relevant experience in a medium-volume, computerized payroll environment with experience in a unionized environment. A certificate in office administration, business administration or accounting and two (2) years of related experience will also be considered. Additional experience would include experience working with integrated financial, human resources and time- tracking/scheduling information systems and the ability to query those systems; reconciling payroll and benefit records and accounts; benefit administration such as: enrollments, terminations, reconciling and reporting; working in a general bookkeeping or an administrative role with experience in processing accounts payable and accounts receivable; experience working in a highly computerized environment and processing financial transactions using an enterprise resource planning (ERP) system and/or accounting software (Sage300 is preferred); Equivalent education and experience may also be considered.
  • Work Schedule: Monday to Friday; 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.
  • Schedule subject to change based on operational requirements.
  • May work evenings and weekends.
  • Hourly wage: $32.62 to $34.15 (2021 rate) and a comprehensive benefit package.
  • The successful candidate is required to provide an acceptable police information/background check.
  • The anticipated start date is March 2022.
