This is electrical inspection and regulatory work of a technical nature involving the inspection of all types of electrical installation and devices to ensure conformity with BC Electrical Code, Safety Standards Act and General and Electrical Regulations and City bylaws and policies. Reviews building plans and inspects installations during construction to ensure that all materials used have been approved by a Certification Agency recognized in the Province of BC and that the work done conforms with the applicable code, bylaw requirements and safety regulations and upon completion and providing technical advice to electrical installers, designers and suppliers. Prepares notices for permit holders, keeps records of inspection and issues oral and written instructions for corrections. The Electrical Inspector 1 surveys wiring in fire damaged buildings and hazardous installations, makes follow-up inspections, recommends legal action if necessary. Prepares reports, writes objection notices, answers counter and telephone enquiries and maintains related records, enters inspection results, books. Renders technical assistance to owners, contractors and engineers in planning installations that will satisfy the Electrical Bylaw. Performs related work as required.

Qualifications include completion of Grade 12 and apprenticeship in electrical work, plus considerable experience as a journeyman electrician. Thorough knowledge of the BC Electrical Code, BC Electrical Safety Standards Act and Regulations and City Electrical Bylaw applicable to electrical installations. Ability to recognize faulty construction of hazardous conditions applicable to electrical installations; to understand and interpret building plans and recognize requirements related to electrical installations. The incumbent will be required to safely enter and work effectively in crawl spaces, attic spaces and high places as well as the ability to climb ladders or steps and work outdoors in all types of weather. Strong communication skills including the ability to express ideas effectively both orally and in writing, and to establish and maintain effective working relations with owners, contractors, trades and others and to enforce rules and ordinances with tact and diplomacy. Sound knowledge of related computer applications is preferred (i.e. Outlook, Internet, GIS and permit and inspection tracking etc.). Driver’s License for the Province of British Columbia, Class 5, and a British Columbia Certificate of Qualification as an Electrician are required.
