About the Role
The Regional District of Nanaimo is seeking a permanent full-time Laboratory Technician in the Wastewater Services department at the French Creek Pollution Control Centre.
The Laboratory Technician contributes to the effective operation of the Wastewater Services Department through ensuring the standards of laboratory accreditation are met, and through the performance of chemical and biochemical analysis on solids and wastewater samples. In addition, other duties will include, reviewing and updating existing laboratory policies, providing recommendations on internal/external sampling, maintaining laboratory equipment, reviewing laboratory data for quality and accuracy, participating in internal and external laboratory audits, and other related duties as required.
Qualifications include a Diploma of Technology in Chemistry/ Environmental Studies, plus three (3) to five (5) years of prior job-related experience in an environmental or chemistry laboratory, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Applicants must possess through knowledge of standard laboratory physical, chemical and bacteriological analytical methods and procedures; working knowledge of WHMIS; knowledge of the Environmental Management Act; the ability to perform field sampling work involving physical activity in all weather conditions; the ability to recognize unusual lab test results; excellent oral and written communication skills and; skills in the maintenance, operation and calibration of standard laboratory equipment.
This is a permanent full-time (40 Hours per week) Union Position. The (2020) rate of pay is $35.26 to $37.12 per hour. The position offers an attractive benefits package as provided within the collective agreement between the Regional District of Nanaimo and the Canadian Union of Public Employees, Local 401.
