Maintenance Planner 


Position Type/ Hours:
This is a permanent full-time position working forty (40) hours per week within the Wastewater Treatment Branch of the Environmental Services Department. This position is within the CUPE 1505 Bargaining Unit. This position is located in the community of Fort McMurray, the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo’s urban centre.
Position Description:
The Maintenance Planner is accountable for detailed maintenance planning as well as to ensure equipment capability and reliability to Operations areas through the efficient application of the maintenance service program. The Maintenance Planner must take into consideration, cost estimating, and control functions in general, as they seek to maximize the availability and useful life of Operations equipment (which includes areas in Water Treatment and Waste Water Treatment)  equipment while achieving budgeted targets in a safe, cost effective, and timely manner

Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Maximize resource productivity by identifying parts, materials, special tools, external services, rentals and documentation.
  • Preparation of job plans with planned cost ready for scheduling detailing parts, materials, special tool, external services and documentation.
  • Prepare weekly work schedules for assigned maintenance area (Mechanical/Electrical/Instrumentation/etc.)
  • Identify health and safety requirements as it pertains to work plan developed.
  • Preparation of job plans to include the logical sequencing of associated tasks, taking into account multi-craft alignment.
  • Maintain bills of material for all equipment.
  • Maintain and continuously improve job plans and tasks lists.
  • Supports the content, updating, and maintenance of the computerized maintenance management system.
  • Perform other related duties as required.


  • A High School Diploma or GED equivalent is required.
  • Journeyperson trade certification is required;
    • Maintenance Planners supporting a Mechanical area will require a valid trade certificate in either of the following; Millwright, Welder, Steamfitter, Machinist, Carpenter,  Plumber/Gasfitter.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of related trade experience which includes a minimum of two (2) years of related maintenance planning experience is required; experience in maintenance planning must have been obtained within the last seven (7) years.
  • A working knowledge of computerized maintenance management systems (preferably SAP or similar) and materials management systems
  • Interprovincial Red Seal Certification is an asset
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products such as Word and Excel is an asset.
You will possess the following:
  • Proven analytical, planning, communication, organizational, interpersonal skills.
  • Detailed and thorough knowledge of production equipment and control systems in an industrial setting.
  • Solid understanding of maintenance planning and scheduling concepts.
  • Knowledge of maintenance practices, performance measures, and scheduling tools and techniques.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, administrative, and leadership skills.
  • Ability to demonstrate a mechanical acumen.
  • Motivated, self-starter who can work well independently or within a team environment.
  • Proven record of developing positive working relations across various business units.
  • Valid Alberta Class Five (5) Drivers licence is required.

$55.73 (Start Rate)
$65.44 (Permanent Rate)
Evaluated Rate:
$48.64 (Start Rate)
$57.31(Permanent Rate)*Permanent rate effective after twelve (12) months of employment.

In addition to the rate of pay, we offer:
