City of Mississauga
Director, Development and Design

Mississauga is a successful and dynamic world class city that is in an exciting period of growth and urban development with inspirational possibilities and potential. Having grown from a collection of villages the sixth largest city in Canada, Mississauga is now entering a new stage in its evolution – one of intensification and urbanization. Situated on the north shore of Lake Ontario, and at the centre of the Golden Horseshoe, Mississauga is an economic powerhouse that celebrates diversity of cultures. With the country’s largest airport on the northeastern corner of the City, access to major rail corridors, and the three busiest highways in the county, Mississauga is central and well-connected. Leading the development planning process, the Director plays a key role in Mississauga achieving its vision – “a place where people choose to be.”

Under the direction of the Commissioner of Planning and Building, the Director, Development and Design champions projects to support the City's strategic planning priorities. A key team contributor, the Director provides innovative, strategic, and professional development advice, along with facilitating future development strategy. As Director, you will champion excellence in urban design, ensuring all future development supports a quality urban realm. Advising Council, the public, and industry professionals, the Director attends meetings to provide explanation of development proposals, the City's planning functions, and procedures. Partnering with community stakeholders and internal partners, the Director liaises with all levels of government, municipal agencies, the land development industry, and the public to represent the City, build business relationships, and promote the City's vision.

With your education and at least 10 years of progressively responsible planning experience, including 5 years at a senior level, the ideal candidate has worked in municipal government or as a consultant for municipalities. You are politically astute, a strategic and organizational-wide thinker, and possess excellent communication skills. You are focused on developing relationships; you demonstrate the ability to negotiate with the land development industry, to work with all levels of government, and with the public. You possess advanced knowledge of planning and development issues and a strong and established development and urban design network. Here is your opportunity to support the strategic direction of the City and achieve planning excellence.
