Director of Engineering and Public Works

The City of Port Alberni is a vibrant community of 17,500 people. Located centrally on Vancouver Island, Port Alberni is a well-serviced municipality that offers residents affordable west coast living, as well as proximity to oceanfront, lakes, rivers and mountains.

We are currently looking for a Director of Engineering and Public Works to join a progressive and dynamic organization. Reporting to the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), this position will lead our Public Works and Engineering teams to ensure the delivery of effective municipal systems. This position is responsible for supervisory, administrative and engineering work, as well as maintaining an effective municipal infrastructure plan. We are looking for a Professional Engineer who is a results-oriented team player.

  • Plan, coordinate, oversee and supervise the operations, projects and programs of the Public Works and Engineering departments, providing both leadership and technical support
  • Prepare and manage departmental and capital project budgets
  • Oversee and manage the long-term infrastructure plan for the City
  • Oversee design work for engineering projects
  • Coordinate and manage engineering work undertaken by consultants
  • Attend Council and other committee meetings as required; prepare and present reports on department projects

Qualifications & Experience:
  • Have attained certification as a Professional Engineer (as recognized by APEGBC)
  • A minimum of 10 years’ experience in municipal engineering or public works operations, including design work and administrative responsibility OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience
  • Proven experience in a supervisory role
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, leadership and teambuilding skills
  • Proven experience in contract management and administration
  • Proven experience with budgeting, project planning and project management
  • Knowledge of the principles, practices, policies, and regulations applicable to municipal engineering projects and services
    • Ability and desire to work in a collaborative manner with a wide range of stakeholders
    • Valid driver’s license for the Province of British Columbia
