Burns Bog Restoration Assistant

Delta’s Office of Climate Action & Environment is looking to hire an auxiliary labourer to assist in building dams in Burns Bog.

Nature and Scope of Work
This field position will work under the supervision of Climate Action & Environment staff and a contractor to plan, design, construct, and install ditch blockages in the interior ditches of Burns Bog. All work will take place outdoors. It is anticipated that the total amount of time for this position will be approximately 490 hours (70 days). Work will preferably take place from March-July, but the dates are flexible and the schedule may be irregular.

Illustrative Examples of Work
The Assistant works with Climate Action & Environment staff and a contractor to design site-specific ditch blockages, focusing on the use of natural construction materials such as wood and peat. The Assistant will also construct ditch blockages, by hand, using low-impact methods to ensure minimal damage to the bog ecosystem. Construction materials are carried by hand to the work site daily. The position will also involve water level monitoring in the bog with the contractor and Delta staff. Lengthy hikes on uneven terrain, up to several hours, are required for this position.

Required Knowledge, Abilities and Skills

  • Strong working knowledge of construction techniques and the use of hand tools.
  • Ability to think creatively in terms of the design and construction of small dam structures, using natural found materials.
  • Excellent physical condition and motivation to work in all weather conditions.
  • Willingness to work on a flexible schedule including weekend and evening work.

Desirable Training and Experience

  • Related experience preferably in a construction or wilderness environment.
  • First Aid and Chainsaw training.
  • A background in bog ecology or hydrology.

Must have access to a vehicle and a valid BC Class 5 Driver’s Licence in order to meet the contractor at the job site (Burns Bog).

The rate of pay for this assignment will be $28.82 per hour plus 12% in lieu of benefits. Interested applicants are requested to apply online at www.delta.ca/employment, to competition #20-43 EX by February 10, 2020.
