This is skilled, routine truck driving work involving the operation of various collections trucks of gross vehicle weight in excess of 18,000kg in the Solid Waste & Recycling Department. An incumbent loads, secures, transports and unloads materials under varying traffic and field conditions; performs pre-trip and post-trip inspections, cleans, checks and performs light servicing work on the unit driven; maintains simple records and work reports.   The successful candidate will be required to accept assignments in other areas of Solid Waste & Recycling, as assigned by a supervisor, and operate all types of single- and tandem-axle vehicles required to perform the work (e.g. Recycling trucks, Automated garbage trucks, Jitney trucks, Container Trucks (Front End Loader), Rear Loader Trucks, etc.), as per operational requirements (spare pool) and perform other related work as required.

Qualifications include completion of grade twelve and considerable related experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience, plus thorough knowledge of the rules of safe operation and precautions to be taken to avoid accidents in the operation of large vehicles with attached or auxiliary equipment. Considerable knowledge of the proper methods used in loading securing, transporting, and unloading of materials including container placement. Considerable knowledge of City street layout and related departmental operations.  Ability to deal courteously and effectively with the public, co-workers and supervisors. The incumbent will demonstrate mechanical aptitude, as well as have previous operating experience, or the ability to be trained, in the operation of the various equipment required for this position. Driver’s License for the Province of British Columbia, Class 3 with Air Brake endorsement, is required.
