Electrical Design Technologist (Continuous)

Engineering and Public Works Department

Involved in, recording, planning, and inspecting of the City’s electrical, street lighting, and traffic control infrastructure.

Investigates, prepares plans, specifications and estimates for the installation, alteration or operation for electrical, street lighting and traffic control infrastructure and projects.

Create and maintain up-to-date computer and paper-based databases, records, plans, technical diagrams, and inventory lists for electrical, street lighting and traffic control infrastructure.

Other Duties:

Reviews the designs, drawings and reports of electrical proposals and work prepared by consultants to ensure they are adequate, meet code and specification, and are suitable.

Reviews work in progress for compliance to specifications; reviews and refers for final approval.

Liaises with departmental staff, outside contractors and municipal departments in respect to electrical systems; works in consultation with the Electrical and Signals section to develop or revise preventative maintenance procedures and MMCD construction standards for electrical, street light and traffic control systems.

Electrical distribution system knowledge.

Develops load calculations and recommends load balancing.

Captures light level readings to ensure compliance with illuminating Engineering Society standards.

Make recommendations regarding types of equipment to be acquired, operational changes and related costs; obtain quotes for the provision of services by outside agencies.


  • High school graduation
  • Diploma of Technology in Electrical and Computer Engineering Technology (Electrical Power and Industrial Option).(2 years) or equivalent.
  • Accredited courses in management studies (1 year)
  • Completion of an up to date Canadian Electrical Code course
  • MMCD course
  • Current and valid Class 5 Driver’s License


  • Organize and prioritize work
  • Understand and apply the principles of electrical design, construction and maintenance.
  • Type 40 wpm
  • Working level operation of current City word processing, AutoCAD, spreadsheet and related specialty software
  • Maintain accurate records, prepare and monitor budgets
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings and specifications
  • Communicate effectively
  • Deal effectively with staff, the public and outside agencies
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships
  • Considerable knowledge of the principles and theory of electricity and electronics and their practical applications
  • Considerable knowledge of the methods and practices relative to electrical system repair, maintenance and installation
  • Considerable knowledge of the City Electrical Bylaw and related applicable electrical codes and regulations
  • Ability to estimate costs of complex electrical installation, repair and maintenance projects
  • Ability to perform research tasks and compile statistical and narrative reports as required
  • Skill in the use of a variety of electrical instruments and related equipment


  • 4 years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Independence: Work is generated by annual objectives and goals and reviewed through meetings with and reports to the Supervisor
  • Issues such as deviations from departmental policy, unusual or complex problems, and budgetary items are discussed with Supervisor with recommendations
  • The incumbent exercises considerable independent judgment and action in the performance of assigned duties


  • Deal with complaints and negative comments

  • Focus on VDT for short periods
  • Work outside in all weather conditions

Work schedule:
7:00 am – 5:00 pm, (an 8 hour period within this range 40 hours per week)
$39.30 per hour
