About Stoney-Nakoda Child & Family Services
Nestled in the beautiful Canadian Rocky Mountains, Stoney Child & Family Services serves the Stoney First Nations community composed of three bands. With a focus on maintaining the preservation of families and collaboration, our mission is to assist and support Stoney families in developing and nurturing safe and strong environments for vulnerable children and youth. Our practice is anti-oppressive and strength-based, as well as culturally sensitive and solutions-focused. Above all, we ensure that all services and decisions are always made in the best interest of the child. 

The Opportunity  
Stoney-Nakoda Child and Family Services are currently seeking a skilled Director of Child and Family Services to join the team in Morley, Alberta on a full-time basis. 

As the Director of Child and Family Services you will oversee the coordination of the daily operation of the Stoney-Nakoda Child and Family Services Agency. More specifically you will ensure the program services are delivered according to the agency’s principles, policies, procedures and legislative requirements and will interpret directives, requirements and policies to program personnel. This role reports directly to the Stoney Child and Family Services Board of Directors and the Tribal Administrator.  

Key areas of responsibility include:
  • Administering the Child and Family Services program as directed by the Board of Directors
  • Monitoring, evaluating and ensuring continuous and efficient on going case management of; Child Intervention and Protection, Foster Care/Homes, Family Violence Prevention, Family Enhancement, Youth and Cultural Camps
  • Acting as a resource to the Board by bringing forward recommendations and providing background information
  • Amending policies, procedures and resources to meet the needs of the agency based on the direction of the Board
  • Identifying emerging trends and needs affecting the Stoney First Nations children and families and ensuring programs are responsive to these
  • Developing, administering and monitoring of the agency budget
  • Developing a business plan and ensuring alignment according to ISC framework
  • Evaluating the program and developing and maintaining an operational work plan that addresses deficits
  • Preparing and submitting funding submissions
  • Providing leadership and management in a multi-disciplinary team environment by supervising, coaching and mentoring
  • Assessing the competencies of staff and identifying strengths and areas for development by creating individual performance plans
  • Ensuring personnel administration is in accordance regulations, policy, and acts
  • Participating in staff recruitment
  • Liaising and maintaining communication with Band programs, government agencies, parents, caregivers, community services and other related organizations
  • Representing agency when interacting with partners and the community including other CFSA’s and DFNA’s

The Ideal Candidate
In order to qualify for this role, you will have a Master of Social Work or a Bachelor of Social Work with a minimum of 5 years experience in a supervisory position. An ideal applicant will have an effective combination of managerial and hands-on experience.

It's imperative that you have a strong understanding of the Child, Youth and Family Enhancement Act and Policy as well as DFNS Agreements and Indigenous Service Canada programs and funding model. A strong working knowledge of First Nation community and family structure, governance, customs and traditions will make you a strong contender for this position. The ability to speak Stoney is considered an asset.

SNCFS is looking for a compassionate and strong leader, who is able to work very effectively in a team environment, bringing with them excellent judgement, diplomacy, inter-personnel, and conflict resolution skills.

This is a position for someone with a dedicated work ethic and who is able to think proactively about prevention.

Understanding of the Alberta legislation is very important and this individual will need to familiarize themselves with Government Bill C-92.

  • Must sign and maintain a strict confidentiality agreement
