Part-Time Water Treatment Plant Operator, Level 1

Union Bay Improvement District (UBID) is a small community on the east coast of Vancouver Island just south of Courtenay and within the Comox Valley Regional District. The function of the Improvement District is to provide drinking water, fire services and street lighting to an extended community along the scenic island coastline.

The UBID is seeking a Water Treatment Operator Level 1. This position plays a key role in ensuring that the UBID provides safe, potable water to the users of the Union Bay water system. Reporting to the Superintendent of Waterworks, the primary responsibilities of this role include:
  1. Daily water treatment operations:
    • Physical check of all analyzers
    • Physical check of all pumps (pressure and heat)
    • Physical check of physical components
    • Record basic water quality parameters
    • Site surveillance
  2. Weekly water treatment plant operations:
    • Microbiological water quality testing; samples to lab
    • Cleaning of process equipment and general upkeep
    • Generator check
    • Intake of deliveries and scheduled visits
    • System repairs and corrective measures
  3. Monthly water treatment plant operations:
    • Calibration of analyzers
    • Samples to lab
  4. Annual water treatment operations:
    • Full spectrum water quality analysis
    • System shut-downs
    • Reservoir inspections – check for leaks, clean
    • Turbine inspections
    • DAF inspection
    • Generator maintenance

Other duties include:
  • Perform a safety and security check of facilities and opening and closing facility duties, enforcing facility rules consistently, tactfully, safely, and promptly.
  • Production of strategic reports and communication tools, such as landowner information de-briefs, water quality reporting to Island Health, Emergency Response Plan updates as needed, bylaw updates, and other plans and communications as needed.
  • Represent UBID at meetings, conferences, and trade shows in a professional manner.

  • Able to effectively respond to customer concerns or complaints, including emergency situations when required
  • Flexible in working a variety of shifts including days, evenings, weekends and holidays

Background and experience:
  • Water treatment operator level 1, or Operator in Training with ability to be certified as a Level 1 within two years
  • Post-secondary education with a focus on water
  • 5 + years experience in the water industry in communications, policy and planning development, community outreach
  • Familiar with the Drinking Water Protection Act and Water Sustainability Act
  • Experience working with Improvement Districts
  • Experience liaising with health authorities and government agencies
  • Has a valid BC Driver’s license
