Public Works Technician - Horticulture


The Village of Lions is a small ocean-side community of 1,334 residents just 15 minutes north of Horseshoe Bay.  The Municipality is known for its small community feel and spectacular scenery. The Public Works Department is seeking an individual with an outstanding work ethic and a safety-first attitude to join our young team of likeminded individuals. As the gardener, you will be responsible for planning, cultivation, planting, pruning and maintenance of flowers, plants, shrubs, trees, lawns and related ornamental, recreational and boulevard areas. Additional related responsibilities trails, beach parks, tennis courts, sports fields, playgrounds, and parks facilities maintenance. The ideal candidate will be organized, creative, innovative and will have a team-orientated work style, that fits with our team of dedicated employees. Approximately 20% of your annual workload is dedicated to working in other areas of Public Works including, but not limited to, water, drainage, streets, and winter road maintenance including snow plowing and salting. Training in these activities as well as furthering your education in horticulture is encouraged and will be provided for.

Desirable Abilities and Skills:
  • Ability to perform skilled and semi-skilled horticulture and landscaping duties;
  • Ability to effectively communicate, verbal and written, and demonstrate excellent listening skills;
  • Ability to deal tactfully with the public in a courteous, professional and effective manner;
  • Ability to work cooperatively and amicably in a team environment with a safety-first attitude;
  • Ability to maintain accurate records related to the portfolio of work;
  • Completion of technical courses in horticulture from a recognized post-secondary institution plus several years related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Considerable knowledge of methods, practices, material, tools and equipment used in horticulture and Landscaping;
  • Considerable knowledge of the names of species of a wide variety of plants, shrubs, trees and flowers and of the preparation and application of fertilizers and spray;
  • Class 5 Driver's License for the Province of British Columbia required.

Permanent, Full-time

Hours of Work:
40 regular hours per week (overtime and on-call work as required)

Rate of Pay:
$32.31 per hour (2019 Rate)
