Reporting to the Trades Foreman 2, the Trades 2 - Mechanic is responsible for skilled mechanical work at the journeyman level in the maintenance and repair of automotive and heavy duty equipment. An incumbent performs general mechanical overhaul and maintenance work on a wide variety of automotive, construction and maintenance equipment; may occasionally supervise the work of one or two helpers. The work of this class is distinguished from lower level classes by the more advanced nature of the duties and the wider latitude in the use of independent judgement. An incumbent works under general supervision exercising considerable independent judgement and action as to the method of repair, after receiving oral instructions or a written work order setting forth a complaint in general terms. Performs related work as required.
Qualifications include completion of Grade 12 supplemented by the completion of a recognized Trade Certificate of Qualification plus considerable general experience at the Journeyman level; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Thorough knowledge of the standard practices, materials, tools and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of automotive and heavy duty equipment. Considerable knowledge of hazards and safety precautions of the trade. Ability to perform a variety of skilled tasks in the overhaul, repair and adjustment of a variety of automotive and related equipment; lay out, assign and check the work of assistants performing unskilled and semi-skilled mechanical tasks; and to understand and effectively carry out general, oral and written assignments with a minimum of supervision. Skill in the use and care of equipment and tools employed in repairing and adjusting automotive equipment. Driver’s Licence for the Province of British Columbia, Class 3 with Air Brake Endorsement, Certificate of Qualification – Mechanic, and Authorized Inspector License from Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement (CVSE) are required.
