Manager of Community Policing


The City of Port Alberni is a vibrant community of 17,500 people. Located centrally on Vancouver Island, Port Alberni is a well-serviced municipality that offers residents affordable west coast living, as well as proximity to oceanfront, lakes, rivers and mountains.

We are currently looking for a Manager of Community Policing to join a progressive and dynamic organization that provides a full range of programs and services to taxpayers.  Reporting to the Manager of Community Safety, the successful applicant will be responsible for the management and oversight of a broad range of community-based crime prevention and public safety programs as well as community policing initiatives.

Responsibilities:
This position provides leadership and supervision to community volunteers engaged in community safety programs and initiatives, as well as develops and implements appropriate community crime prevention programs, activities and initiatives in alignment with RCMP and City strategic priorities.

Specific responsibilities include:
  • Directing, coordinating and supervising community volunteers engaged in community safety programs and initiatives.Liaising with various community service agencies, government bodies, city staff and RCMP members regarding community policing and crime prevention programs and activities.
  • Creating and coordinating marketing strategies and public relations campaigns.
  • Engaging with community groups and members of the public to educate and advise on matters of safety.
  • Post secondary education in a related field, plus a minimum of 5 years’ related experience working in a policing environment; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Previous experience in the management and supervision of volunteers.
  • Extensive knowledge of community policing and crime prevention philosophies and methodologies.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and team building skills.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain RCMP reliability security clearance.
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license for the Province of British Columbia.
  • Previous formal training in conflict resolution and/or alternative dispute resolution would be an asset.
