Reporting to the Manager Engineering Development, this is complex technical office and field work of a civil engineering nature at the sub-professional level. In this role, you will facilitate infrastructure planning of development projects in Burnaby by reviewing design layouts, detailed drawings, specifications and related data for City infrastructure, making field inspections, and completing calculations as necessary. You will check designs submitted by consultants for technical adequacy, scope of work, and conformance to City standards and specifications, and make recommendations for modifications or drawing refinement. You would also review applications from utility companies to install or relocate gas, electricity, telephone or other mains, ducts or lines, in order to ensure compliance with design and service standards as set by the Engineering and Planning departments.  You would issue permits as necessary, liaise with Operations for works completed by City crews,conduct field inspections of work sites, and prepare notes, maps, reports, and calculations as required. Performs related work as required. 

Qualifications include graduation from a diploma program from an Institute of Technology in Civil Engineering plus sound related design experience, eligibility for registration as an Applied Science Technologist or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.  Sound knowledge of applicable engineering design principles, standards, methods, and mathematics; of municipal engineering practices, procedures, functions and of the rules and regulations applicable to the section's functions; and of related construction methods and materials and of survey methods and procedures. Working knowledge of the functions and responsibilities of various internal departments and external agencies as related to the work performed. Ability to prepare designs for specific public works services and to review drawings for technical accuracy and conformance with municipal standards and related specifications; to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of internal and external contacts and handle enquiries and provide technical information and assistance; to prepare, read, and interpret plans, specifications, contract documents, and related materials; and to direct the work of survey or drafting staff on a project basis. Driver’s License for the Province of British Columbia is required.

This is a temporary full time opportunity until July 15, 2020.
