Main Purpose & Function
The City Arborist is responsible for the city-wide management of the Urban Forestry operation. The incumbent will plan, organize, direct and control the operation by developing and implementing long and short term maintenance plans, performance standards, rules, guidelines and regulations in accordance with emerging conditions. Participates in realizing city-wide goals for the urban environment including Greenest City Initiatives. Contributes to key policy directions in urban forestry management and sustainability for the Park Board.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
  • Demonstrated experience in providing effective leadership to staff in both professional and labourer positions, in the areas of: supervision of staff including hiring and termination, discipline, performance and attendance management, coaching, training and general staff development.
  • Establishes and maintains effective communication and coordination with other divisions and departments in the Park Board, the City, other agencies and the general public.
  • Ensures equipment and work practices conform to relevant legislation and regulations including OH&S requirements.
  • Monitors operating and capital budgets and provides input and recommendations into the budget process. The annual operating budget for the Urban Forestry Operation is $4.8 million dollars.
  • There are 64 employees in the Urban Forestry Operation (currently 6 positions report directly to the Supervisor: 3 Superintendents, 1 Urban Forestry Technician, 1 Integrated Pest Management Coordinator and 1 Urban Forestry Clerk).
  • Responsible for management street/park tree and forestry operations.
  • Ensures that levels of inspection, maintenance and planting are maintained in accordance with the City and Park Board policies.
  • Manages responses to claims resulting from tree damage.

Education and Experience:
  • Graduation from a university, institute of technology or college of Urban Forest Management, supplemented by courses in horticulture, project management, supervision and management training or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Minimum of 5 to 7 years of progressive related management with demonstrated experience in providing effective leadership to staff in both professional and labourer positions, preferably in a public sector unionized environment.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Extensive knowledge and understanding of urban forestry operations and effective customer service.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage large budgets
  • Ability to set priorities and meet deadlines
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills including the ability to coach and train others
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong proficiency in computer skills and the ability to use various productivity software applications including SAP, MS Outlook, Word and Excel.
