The Port Coquitlam Fire and Emergency Services invite interested qualified candidates to apply for the position of Deputy Chief Operations. Reporting directly to the Fire Chief, this position is accountable as a member of the Department’s senior management team to provide leadership, direction and assist the Fire Chief in organizing and administering the operations of the Fire Department. This position is accountable for the direction and supervision of staff including the application of policy and procedures as well as personnel and labour relations matters.
The Deputy Fire Chief is responsible for planning, organizing, coordinating and directing all fire suppression and emergency services programs for the City. The Deputy Chief exercises considerable independence of judgment in carrying out duties in accordance with departmental policies, plans and objectives and may also be required act for the Fire Chief. Work performance is reviewed by the Fire Chief on the basis of established objectives and effective services rendered to the Department and the City.
You will bring to this role well developed leadership and planning skills coupled with financial, project, and management experience. Your ability to develop credibility and build effective working relationships with others as well as the ability to effectively manage change are key qualities required for the position.
As this position is responsible to respond and provide incident command functions at emergency scenes, a background of operational experience is required in this role.
Required Training, Education and Experience: Completion of the 12th school grade supplemented by post-secondary education in a related field plus considerable firefighting experience and sound supervisory experience as a Fire Officer or higher or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Supervisory experience at a progressively responsible level within the Fire Service and a balance of education and practical experience is essential.
Required Licenses, Certificates and Experience:
- Class 3 or 5 Driver’s license with air endorsement for the Province of British Columbia.
- Completion of Fire Officer Level 1, 2, and 3
- Completion of Incident Safety Officer (FS185 or equivalent)
- Extensive knowledge of fire suppression techniques, equipment, and apparatus.
Preferred Education, Training:
- Post-secondary education at a recognized educational institution in any of the following areas is preferred:
- Civic Management
- Fire Executive Management
- Business Administration
- Emergency Management
- Fire Officer Level 4
Required Living Boundaries:
The Deputy Fire Chief has emergency duties which make their availability on short notice of paramount importance. Therefore, anyone accepting the position of Deputy Chief must reside within the primary living boundaries of 30 Kilometers from the boundaries of the City of Port Coquitlam
Hours of Work:
The incumbent to this position will work a 4 day work week, 10.7 hours per day in accordance with the operational requirements of the position. The days and hours of work are subject to change based on operational requirements. This position is also required to be on call by pager, telephone, or radio 24 hours a day 7 days a week.
This process will be determined by means of an interview panel and presentation that will evaluate the candidate’s knowledge, skill and abilities as they relate to the position.
