The Utilities Group Department of the Infrastructure Services division has an opportunity for qualified individuals to apply for the position of Wastewater Operator. Reporting to Chief Operator Wastewater, this position offers 76.5 hours bi-weekly starting as soon as possible.
Wastewater operators are responsible for the wastewater collection system and the wastewater treatment process, as well as directing Level I and Operator Trainee’s in the operations of the systems and in accordance with Ministry of Environment regulations and municipal standards. This position may be required to respond in an on-call capacity.
Qualified candidates possess a grade 12 diploma and completion of a post-secondary Environmental Monitoring (EM) or Water and Wastewater Technology (WWT) program or may have trades certifications in plumbing, electrical, millwright, pipe fitting or power engineering supplemented by approximately 2-4 years of progressive related work experience. Qualified candidates shall possess the abilities to read and interpret drawings; operate and maintain a variety of equipment; assist with the maintenance and repairs of mechanical equipment such as pumps, valves, and instrumentation when needed; update, maintain, and review daily logged data; and oversee outside contractors in the absence of supervisory staff. As well must have knowledge of WorkSafeBC regulations and occupational hazards related to the work and the strength, stamina and coordination to permit the performance of outdoor work in all weather conditions.
The successful candidate demonstrates excellent verbal and written communication skills, proven success in training and development of staff and the ability to plan, assign, and review the work of operators and other subordinates with economy and efficiency with respect to time, equipment, and materials. The successful candidate also has a strong initiative and ability to work with minimal supervision and will work well with others and contribute to a positive teamwork environment.
It is preferred that candidates possess the EOCP Wastewater certifications in either Collections or Treatment Levels 1 - 4 however, candidates with work experience eligible towards the completion of the EOCP Wastewater certifications may be considered. Additionally, all candidates must possess a valid BC Class 5 driver’s license and must provide a satisfactory drivers abstract prior to beginning employment.
