The Utilities Group of the Infrastructure Services division has an opportunity for qualified individuals to apply for the position of Operator Trainee. Reporting to the Chief Operator Sewer, this position offers 76.5 hours bi-weekly starting as soon as possible for a period of one year.

The Trainee assists more senior Wastewater Operator’s in the operation and monitoring of the various processes at the wastewater treatment plant and sewer lift stations and assists with the maintenance and troubleshooting of the equipment and facilities throughout the plant and at the lift stations. Duties include but are not limited to; routine inspections of equipment; general cleaning and housekeeping; sample collection; equipment and grounds maintenance; and the regular completion of related records and logs.

Qualified candidates possess a grade 12 diploma and completion of a post-secondary Environmental Monitoring (EM) or Water and Wastewater Technology (WWT) program or may have trades certifications in plumbing, electrical, millwright, pipe fitting or power engineering. Qualified candidates also possess basic knowledge of the principles of wastewater treatment; some knowledge of sampling and analytical procedures; and working knowledge of Microsoft Office including Word and Excel. Qualified candidates also possess the proven abilities to follow a written Standard Operating Procedure; inspect and recognize mechanical problems and assist with troubleshooting; prioritize work and maintain effective operations; assist in repairs of equipment; and to safely operate mobile equipment.

As a requirement of the position, the successful applicant must hold a valid class 5 BC driver’s license and must provide a satisfactory drivers abstract prior to beginning employment and have sufficient physical strength and coordination to permit performance of manual work outdoors in all weather conditions.

This position works 76.5 hours bi-weekly (including one weekend day) at a rate of $27.78 per hour. Each day of work shall be 8.5 hours exclusive of a one-half (1/2) hour lunch period.
