ABOUT THE ROLE
The Regional District of Nanaimo is seeking a permanent full-time Mechanic in the Transportation Services department.
The successful candidate will be responsible for vehicle and equipment repairs, including diagnosis and road testing, responding to roads calls for breakdowns or accidents, and the maintenance of records related to those repairs and servicing. Duties also include welding and fabricating building, plant or equipment modifications, performing building maintenance, repairs and clean up duties.
Applicants must possess a high school diploma, plus a trade’s qualification in heavy duty or commercial transport mechanics, a valid BC Commercial Vehicle Inspection Program certificate, plus over 5 years prior job-related experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. A working knowledge of WHMIS and Survival First Aid courses, good working knowledge of hydraulics, mobile equipment, standard bus electrical systems, air conditioning and multiplex wiring systems, as well as knowledge of safe and proper operation of equipment and work procedures is also required. Familiarization with wheelchair lift/ramp and restraint system vehicles, as well as, CNG Certification, would also be assets. The incumbent must possess excellent communications skills with the ability to work under stress and make quick judgement calls. In addition, the incumbent must possess a valid Class 2 BC Driver’s License with Air Brake Endorsement.
This is a Permanent full-time (40 hours per week) Union Position. The (2019) rate of pay is $34.57 to $36.39. The position offers an attractive benefits package as provided within the collective agreement between the Regional District of Nanaimo and the Canadian Union of Public Employees, Local 401.
