Reporting to the Superintendent, Solid Waste and Recycling, Signs and Road Markings, this is supervisory work in planning, organizing and supervising the collection and disposal of Streetscape Receptacles, Abandoned Waste, Litter, Bulky Items, Appliances, Mattresses and/or general services; as well as coordinating the daily operation of the Eco-Centre. An incumbent schedules, coordinates and directs human resources and equipment to provide efficient service and process a variety of requests and complaints from the public on related matters. Allocates equipment; prepares records and reports for operational, billing, costing and budget purposes. Schedules truck and equipment maintenance and repair. Investigates and processes complaints and enquiries from the public and interprets and explains applicable regulations and procedures to same. Interviews and selects new employees; motivates and coaches employees; prepares performance reviews and documents related to employee issues; and leads regular crew talks. Responds to emergency calls during off-shift hours. Drives and operates single & tandem axle manual, semi-automated and fully automated Solid Waste and Recycling trucks of G.V.W. 18,000 kgs. or greater, as required. Performs related work as required.

Qualifications include completion of Grade 12 supplemented by courses or training related to the work plus considerable related experience, preferably in a supervisory capacity or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Considerable knowledge of the methods, procedures, materials, tools and equipment used in solid waste and recycling collection and disposal and general services operations; of the policies, rules and regulations governing the operations and the requirements of those served by it; and of the hazards and of safety precautions applicable to the operations supervised. Ability to plan, assign, coordinate, problem solve and supervise the work of subordinates with economy and efficiency in use of time, equipment and materials; to prepare records and reports and develop and implement new and/or improved work schedules, methods and procedures; to communicate effectively (i.e. verbal and written), to prioritize customer requests, and to defuse and resolve conflicts as they arise; to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates and other staff and to deal tactfully and effectively with the public; and to meet emergencies and organize crews and equipment to deal with operational requirements. Driver’s License for the Province of British Columbia, Class 3 with Air Brake Endorsement is required.
