Langley City, a community of 27,000 people positioned in a rapidly growing area, is widely known as an award winning City. Langley City is a progressive and well-led organization and has an attractive career position available for a Director of Development Services. With the extension of the fixed rail rapid transit to Langley City no longer a distant vision, Langley City is approaching a pivotal moment as it grows within an increasingly connected region. The associated Transit Oriented Development (TOD) opportunities will provide new access and connections to Metro Vancouver, opening up a new awareness and market opportunity for the City. It will further reinforce the City as a regional city centre within Metro Vancouver and a development hub in the Fraser Valley. The recently adopted vision documents Langley City: Nexus of Community and its companion document entitled Langley City Vision: Recommendations and Implementation Report establish a comprehensive plan that predicts transformational growth and that builds on Langley City’s strengths to create a vibrant and thriving model community over the next 25+ years. The Director of Development Services will play an integral role in turning aspirational and functional goals from dream into practical reality. An update to the Official Community Plan and Zoning Bylaw is already underway along with the creation of the Nicomekl River District Neighbourhood Plan.
Reporting to the Chief Administrative Officer, the Director is responsible for the effective leadership, advice and support on planning; building, bylaw and licensing; and development sustainability initiatives. The Director is responsible for identifying and researching planning issues and for developing and administering comprehensive plans, programs, policies and regulations for the physical growth and the social development of the community and for the preparation and updating of the Official Community Plan and Zoning Bylaw. The City is seeking an experienced individual who is comfortable managing many different priorities concurrently, and whom is adept at moving agendas forward in a multi-stakeholder environment. The successful candidate will be a visionary and innovative individual with strong strategic and public consultation skills along with the dedication, commitment and drive to ensure the successful completion of objectives established by Council, City bylaws and provincial statutes.
The ideal candidate will have a Master’s Degree in community or regional planning recognized by the Canadian Institute of Planners and has 7 to 10 years of progressively responsible supervisory experience. Registration as a Member of the Canadian Institute of Planners and a valid Class 5 Driver’s Licence is required.
