Reporting to the Manager Transportation Planning, this is technical work at the semi-professional level involved in designing preliminary roadway plans. An incumbent of this class provides direction, interpretation, advice, information and assistance to internal and external contacts on matters relating to transportation design and prepares transportation planning prerequisites for rezoning and subdivision applications. The work also involves researching, compiling, assembling and analyzing data and materials on specific aspects of planning projects and a wide range of planning matters, preparing reports, performing skilled drafting work, using a computer to create, retrieve and manipulate data, and conducting site investigations. Performs related work as required.
Qualifications include completion of Grade 12, supplemented by advanced technical courses, design and computer aided drafting, and related elementary planning courses plus considerable related experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Considerable knowledge of the bylaws, municipal policies, practices and procedures governing the work performed. Sound knowledge of transportation design principles, procedures, standards and objectives and of methods and techniques applicable to research, drafting, layout and graphic presentations and municipal planning work; of the practices and procedures involved in computer aided design and use of a computer to create, retrieve and manipulate data. Ability to design preliminary roadway plans; read and interpret plans and drawings; research, assemble, compile and analyze data; make technical calculations; prepare transportation planning prerequisites, reports and graphic presentations; and make recommendations for the solution of transportation design problems; to perform skilled drafting work, conduct site investigations and prepare and maintain a variety of materials such as maps, records and statistical information; to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of internal and external contacts; to communicate effectively at meetings and to provide information, advice, assistance, direction and interpretation on related matters and problems; and to perform duties with a minimum of supervision. Skill in the use of a computer and AutoCAD to create, retrieve and manipulate data and of drafting, calculating, field and other equipment used in the work. Familiarity with GIS is desirable. Driver’s Licence for the Province of British Columbia is required.
