Port Coquitlam Fire and Emergency Services has an exciting and challenging opportunity for a qualified and experienced individual to join our team as the Assistant Chief of Training and Development. Reporting to the Deputy Chief of Operations, this position will work cooperatively as part of the senior management team to ensure the overall goals of the department and City are met. The incumbent performs all aspects of developing, implementing and evaluating the department training plan including advising the Deputy Chief of the results of operational effectiveness, practical performance and new programs pertaining to the training needs of the department.   Additionally, this position is responsible for ensuring proper operation, safety and maintenance of the departments training site and burn building.   

The incumbent may be called upon to act in the role of the on call Duty Chief and be required to respond to major incidents. The incumbent will be required to be available by telephone and/ or radio 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Further, the incumbent must live within 30 kilometers of the city limits to ensure response requirements.

A commitment to high professional standards is required and experience in both Fire and EMS Training is important in order to be successful in this role. The ideal candidate must have an inclusive management style and possess strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Required Training, Education and Experience:
  • Fire Officer Level 3
  • Fire Service Instructor Level 2 and Incident Safety Officer (FS 185 or equivalent).  
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in a broad variety of fire and rescue service roles including a minimum of 3 years at a supervisory level.
  • Extensive experience in suppression operations, techniques and equipment
  • Extensive knowledge or certification in Special Teams Operations 
  • Experience in computer programs such as Word, Power Point, Outlook and FDM
  • Extensive knowledge of fire medical training programs and associated medical licensing procedures
  • Valid Class 3 or 5 B.C. Driver’s License air brake endorsement

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Fire Officer Level 4
  • A diploma or degree in Fire Executive Management, Civic Administration or Leadership, or an equivalent combination of experience and training will be considered.

Hours of Work:
The incumbent to this position will work a 5 day work week, 37.5 hours per day in accordance with the operational requirements of the position.
